Even though I live, eat, and breathe vintage jewelry all day every day, it just doesn’t cut it when it comes to satisfying any sort of hunger pangs. When it comes to food, I’d have to say I love anything Latin American related as it’s the food I grew up on. My mom is from Cuba, my best friend is a Spanish teacher, and I have a ton of amigos throughout Latin America and beyond. ¡Me Encanta!
I love Latin culture, absolutely LOVE IT, it’s part of what makes me, me. From my style of living, to my jewelry design, and obviously, food. So it comes without reason that if there is any excuse to do a blog post on anything remotely Hispanic related….Twist My Arm! and Bienvenidos Cinco de Mayo.
Contrary to popular belief, Cinco De Mayo is much more celebrated in the United States than in Mexico. Throughout the U.S. it’s become an annual fiesta filled with a healthy dose of debauchery, huge sombreros that randomly appear around 1am por la mañana (morning), and many a gringo flaunting their Spanish skills.
In actuality,Cinco de Mayo or the 5th of May en Ingles is in recognition of the 1861 Battle of Puebla, in which a small Mexican army crushed the massive French forces in a town on the outskirts of Mexico City. The victory became symbolic of the country’s three-year struggle against French occupation. Cinco de Mayo is Not the celebration of Mexico’s independence day. El Grito de la Indepedencia (The Cry of Independence) is held annually on Sept. 16 in honor of Mexico’s independence from Spanish rule in 1810.
One thing is for sure Mexico has a long and fascinating history, their culture is rich in heritage, their people are huge in heart, and true Mexican cuisine is to die for!!! So let’s get this fiesta started!!!
