The Great Gatsby Jewelry

Just in case you live under an entertainment rock, The Great Gatsby premieres today, starring Leonardo Dicaprio, Tobey Mcguire, and Carey Mulligan.  Based on its literary namesake, the Great Gatsby written by F. Scott Fitzgerald was published in 1927 and takes place in 1922 during the Roaring Twenties:

A term sometimes used to refer to the 1920s, characterizing the decade’s distinctive cultural edge in New York CityChicagoParisBerlin,London, and many other major cities during a period of sustained economic prosperity. French speakers called it the “années folles” (“Crazy Years”),[1] emphasizing the era’s social, artistic, and cultural dynamism. “Normalcy” returned to politics in the wake of hyper-emotional patriotism during World War I, jazz music blossomed, the flapper redefined modern womanhood, and Art Deco peaked. Economically, the era saw the large-scale diffusion and use of automobiles, telephones, motion pictures, and electricity, unprecedented industrial growth, accelerated consumer demand and aspirations, and significant changes in lifestyle and culture. The media focused on celebrities, especially sports heroes and movie stars, as cities rooted for their home team and filled the new palatial cinemas and gigantic stadiums. In most major countries women were given the right to vote for the first time. Finally the Wall Street Crash of 1929 ended the era, as the Great Depression set in worldwide, bringing years of worldwide gloom and hardship.

Up until the last sentence, that sounds like one hell of an amazing time!!!  All I can see in my head is tons of opulence, drop dead gorgeous flapper millinery, guys looking all swanky in their linen suits with shiny wing tip shoes, HOLY Mary Mother of God beads dripping in the form of amazing trimmed dresses and jewels, tons of sparkly jewelry adorning women everywhere.  All the while glorious jazz music is playing in the background and everyone is having the time of their lives in my Utopian 1920’s dream.

It’s also the same decade that gave birth to costume jewelry. Coco Chanel and Miriam Haskell were both independently paving the way for a whole new art form to shake things up in the jewelry world.  I’ll tell you one thing, Art Deco jewelry is about to go bonkers and it will be everywhere by the Fall.  Layered long pearl necklaces, fabulous headpieces, and glitzy chandelier earrings are all going to be trending in great Gatsby fashion.

The first jewelry collection to hit the pike is the one and only, Tiffany & Co., the Grand Dame, Fairest of Them All,  and epitome of Luxurious Sparkle Jewel Fabulous.

A Million bucks wouldn’t even get you too far in this Diamond Studded Tiffany Glitz Fest as you’ll soon see!!!!
